New Orleans school educator has been teaching for nearly 60 years


It is Teachers Appreciation Week and one local educator is marking almost 60 years in the classroom. Ms. Sylvia Crier is celebrating her 57th Teachers’ Appreciation Week. She is New Orleans’ longest-tenured public high-school teacher. She is a teacher known for having stellar attendance, helping students stay in uniform code, and encouraging them to engage in the political process once they turn 18. She began her career in the classroom in 1964. She’s taught through hurricanes, the pandemic and so many other challenges along the way. She currently teaches at McDonogh 35 College Preparatory High School. She was honored in several ways over the last few decades including winning the New Orleans Excellence in Teaching award in 2016. The Orleans Parish School Board surprised Crier with a big bash for her 80th birthday back in 2020.
