Cape Coral victim loses $2,000 in online job scam

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – The Cape Coral Police Department is warning people about a job scam that cost one person thousands of dollars.

The victim told police they accepted a new job the week of Christmas, after answering a Facebook post promising a work from home opportunity.

The fake company offered to pay the victim for new computer equipment and software.

When the victim got the check for the gear the scammer told them to deposit the money in a separate checking account.

After that, the scammer asked the victim to buy a series of gift cards. The victim bought four $500 gift cards on three occasions, totaling to $6,000.

The victim told police the check ended up bouncing and they gave the scammer all the gift card serial numbers.

Now they are out of a job and quite a bit of money.

To avoid falling victim the Better Business Bureau encourages people to investigate future employers to see if the business is legit, using a credit card when you can to dispute charges easier and report the scam to police.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call Cape police.
